PFC Roberto Hernandez, USAR

Roberto Hernandez, 91, passed away on Monday, October 5th, at 6:14 am in San Antonio, Texas. Roberto was born on January 28, 1924, in Del Rio Texas. He honorably served in the United States Army, as part of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He and his unit valiantly fought in many battles, including Operation Dragoon, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, during World War II. His awards include both a Victory Medal and a Distinguished Unit Citation. He married his wife, Eloisa. He was a devout Catholic, and a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Roberto was preceded in death by his parents, Benigno and Merehilda Hernandez; his wife Eloisa Maldonado Hernandez; his brother, Octaviano Hernandez; and his son Roberto Hernandez. Roberto is survived by his brother Manuel Hernandez; two daughters, Rosa Linda Correa, and Cynthia H. Garcia; grandchildren MereStacia (Karlton) Killebrew, Sonya Michelle Correa, Jacqueline (Jonathan) Vargas, Kathleen (Weston) Benson, and Fernando Gabriel Garcia; great-grandchildren Alice Elizabeth Vargas, Audrey Blair Vargas, and Kage Dylan Killebrew; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 – 9 in the funeral home chapel. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A Mass will be Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church officiated by Father Clay Hunt. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery on 2nd Street. Full military honors will be rendered by the US Army and the American Legion Honor Guard Post #585.
