Joe Stephen Mejía was welcomed into God’s eternal glory on December 30th, 2020 in San Antonio, Tx. He was born August 22, 1966, in San Angelo, Texas. A veteran of Operation Dessert Storm-Gulf War, he served as a sergeant in the United States Army 1st Calvary Division for 9 years. A former Golden Gloves boxing champion who fought fiercely in the ring & in life. Joe Stephen “Steve” Mejía was a man who had devoted his life to God. Not only did he help any person within reach, but he did so without hesitation & with a smile. He was a former president of the American Federation of Government Employees as well as a former President of the San Felipe Lions Club, taking pride in doing anything he could to assist his community & fellow men. He had a heart of gold that touched many in our community. He was a devoted husband, dedicated father, protective brother, loving grandfather, & dependable friend. He left an indelible impression on everything & everyone he touched. He lit up a room. His humor & personality were one-of-a-kind & made all feel welcomed. He was a man highly respected & admired by the LAFB community where he devoted 23 years of his life. He was known to have the firmest handshake, the sharpest attire, & a true passion for helping people. He was a true fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His happiness came from spending time with the love of his life, watching his sons achieve many of their personal goals, but his pride & joy was watching his grandson grow before his eyes. He is proceeded in death by his mother, Virginia Jane Mejía, his in laws Guadalupe Torres Jr. & Eva Suarez Torres, grandparents, Jesus & Aurora Suarez, Guadalupe Torres Sr. & Maria Torres, grandparents, Jose Leon & Virginia Lucero Montaño, Great -grandfather, Reyes Montelongo, uncles, Steve, Joey, Ernesto, & Jerry Montaño, and brother-in-law Rick Labelle. Survivors include his lovely & beloved wife of 32 years, Katherine Mejía, sons Stephen Rey Mejia (Chrystine), Gerald David Mejia, & Brandon Ernesto Mejia, grandson, Stephen Rey Mejía Jr., brother, Paul David Mejía, sister, Nancy Montaño, grandmother, Faye Aguirre, uncle Gilbert Montaño, aunts, Albesa Montaño, Sylvia Ney Montano, & Rosie Montano, brother-in-laws, Guadalupe Torres III (Patty), Robert Lee Torres, David Lee Torres (Tammy), Rogelio Torres (Mary) & Ray Torres (Rachel); brother-in-law, Ralph Garcia, sister-in-law, Jo Elda Hanson (Scott), nephews, Adam, & Jordan Garcia, Guadalupe Torres IV, Adrian Torres, David Lee Torres, John David Torres, Ray Andres Torres, Rogelio Torres Jr., Gregory Torres, Ray Suarez Jr., & Jaron Fields, nieces, Eva Danielle Muna, Kristin Torres, Isabel Torres, Emily Rae Torres, & Erica Hardin. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, & cousins. Honorary pallbearers include his grandson, Stephen Rey Mejía Jr., brother, Paul David Mejía, & PPA comrades. Pallbearers include Danny Muñoz, David Lee Torres, Rick Alfaro, Bobby Diaz, Rod Rangel & Joe Cortinas. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Faith. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 2p.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
