Dr. Emile G. Abbott, M.D.

Dr. Emile G. Abbott, MD, aka “Bill” or “Doc”, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to his family and the communities he served throughout his life. Born on May 18, 1940, in Columbus, Georgia, Dr. Abbott was raised in Savannah. He pursued his passion for medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, where he earned his medical degree. Following his graduation, he served his country in the United States Navy, completing his residency at the Norfolk Naval Base. After a tour in Japan, he was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1972, Dr. Abbott established a private medical practice in Georgia, where he faithfully served patients for 17 years. During this time, he played an instrumental role in strengthening the local healthcare system, including helping to build a hospital and organizing EMT training programs for the Rockdale County Fire Department. He also gave generously of his time as team physician for the Rockdale High School football and wrestling teams. In 1990, Dr. Abbott and his beloved wife, Frances M. Abbott, relocated to Del Rio TX, where they continued their shared commitment to caring for others. For 27 years, they provided medical services to the community, becoming trusted and respected figures. They retired together in 2016 after decades of dedicated practice. Dr. Abbott was a lifelong philanthropist and an active member of civic organizations, including the Lions Club International and Rotary International. His commitment to service extended beyond medicine, reflecting his deep belief in giving back to the communities that shaped his life. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Abbott was a man of wide-ranging interests. He was an avid photographer whose work ranged from rodeos to early Native American rock art, and he enjoyed sailing, jeeping, and traveling the world. He also found great pleasure in fellowship through cigar and wine clubs. Dr. Abbott was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Frances M. Abbott, and he is survived by his sons, James (Tony) and William (B.J.). Dr. Abbott will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his patients, his community, and his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his work and kindness. A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 10 a.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Faith.
